FAIRMONT VILLA, TAGHAZOUT, MOROCCO

[READ]

Cultivated by nomadic Berber, Arab-Islamic, and European influences, this family villa located in the coastal region of Taghazout, Morocco showcases a creative re-interpretation of Moroccan decorative arts and culture.

Working with linear spaces constructed of travertine, glass and framed with warm light oak joinery it is transformed with notions of the sea and its connection to local lifestyle.

The private residence is located in a region renowned for its fishing culture, which has in turn influenced the use of natural materials and textures such as rattan, hemp and clay. Jute dipped in plaster is woven to create the illusion of a fishing net and adorns the shutters of the stylish bar area.

Hand woven art by Caralarga, a Mexico-based artist, which uses raw cotton threads and textile waste is hung in the dining area. Several contemporary re-interpretations of berber rugs add further depth and tactility. Handmade driftwood furniture pieces soften and bring about a connection to nature and the formidable force of the sea.
